Alumna Highlight: Alys Bednarek

“Studying abroad in Florence, Italy, has been a life-changing experience for me, educationally, physically, and emotionally. Every day was an adventure.

“LdM has impacted my life, in such great depth that I wish to share it with family and friends back home.

Alys Bednarek

I’ve made a lot of great connections with new friends, classmates, professors, and staff at LdM.
I still keep in contact with these individuals through various forms of media. My artistic skills have massively grown and this experience has made me feel more motivated and confident about continuing to create art after graduation. I felt a sense of freedom to express myself within my works without being judged. This helped me express more of my inner Black joy in my life. Feelings more at peace with my expressions towards Black and African culture.
Living within a community where art is constantly thriving was truly exciting and comforting to experience. I visited various Art museums, Art studios, and churches. I also had the privilege to travel to multiple cities and towns within Italy. Not only did I travel to Italy, but I also was able to travel to other countries like Africa to see my tribe for the first time, and Scotland to visit some of my family from my mother’s side. These were all great life-changing experiences.
Along with this trip came many wonderful friendships that have impacted my life in such a deep way. I went to restaurants, had classes, and traveled with these various individuals, and I loved every experience of studying abroad.
Studying at LdM has encouraged me to pursue my master’s degree in Fine Arts and photography in a different country outside of the United States.
