< PreviousJOURNAL 70 71 JOURNAL Through learning how to oil-paint this semester, I have been able to appreciate the material and explore my artistic style through the assignments. The master copy taught me the importance of studying from past great artists, while the landscape and still-life demonstrated to me the effect of creating a mood through colors. There is still lots to learn in oil-painting and about myself as an artist, but these works best exemplify where I am now and (hopefully) what artistic direction I am headed in the future. Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Prof. Gregory Burney PDM 140 Foundation Oil Painting PDM GRACE MONTIJOURNAL 72 73 JOURNAL Still Life Description This work is a still life on canvas using oil paint. It displays the movement of light through the fabric, along with casting shadows from the fruit. The display used a vivid orange bowl, a ripe lemon, a bright apple, and a reflective squash. I used a dim blue for the background while using intense colors for the objects for them to stand out. I chose this specific perspective because I like the way the shadows are placed amongst the objects. My favorite part is the lemon because I think of it as a symbol of Italy, specifically the Amalficoast, which I didn’t get a chance to visit but reminds me that I will sometime in the future. Landscape Description This work is an architecture piece on canvas using oil paint. When I think of Italy, I think of buildings with earthy tones and the blotchy barn red roofs. This painting displays a gloomy day in Florence with the sun just peaking out on the left. Not too many shadows are cast to give more visibility in the details of the buildings. Each building has its own identity and history, shown well in the distressed look of the disappearing colors. There is a structure to the objects but also a sense of delicacy. Overall the colors used were muted to create a sense of tranquility. My favorite part about this piece is every bit of reflected light brought through the painting. Project II: Still life “I take my hat off to you” is what was said to me after completing this piece by spending hours discovering shadows, light, and color. This is my proudest piece that shows me that anything is possible with a little passion and motivation. From starting the still life at LdM and finishing it at home, painting a landscape from this rooftop picture I had taken from a library in Florence, to being inspired by Plautilla Nelli’s “The Last Supper” for my final painting, I experienced feelings of joy and fond memories of the beautiful city I called home for a month as I painted. Although all of these paintings were challenging in many ways for my little experience in painting with oil, time, patience, and the wonderful guidance of Gregory contributed to these two pieces, I can happily look back on. The purpose of this painting was to study the composition and texture of the piece and to notice the lights and darks of the piece. Landscape Painting The landscape painting is a picture taken from a place in Florence. The piece was used to develop perspective skills and to work with color during a sunset. Master Copy The master copy painting is a section taken from Van Huysum’s painting “Vase of Flowers”. This piece was made to develop detailed skills and to replicate as close as possible to the original painting.
