Benedetto by Raffaello: It is easy to underestimate the importance of human anatomy. However, it is essential in creating a realistic piece. This work is blended heavily using graphite, which contributes to the overall cohesiveness of the drawing. After bringing my bags up three flights of stairs, I started exploring, finding that my bedroom window led out to a balcony. It was there that I saw the Duomo for the first time. This drawing’s view is based on this memory and the start of my school year full of new experiences. I think about my time abroad every day because Florence has become a part of me and changed who I am.JOURNAL 66 67 JOURNAL PDM I was inspired to paint a cut orange from a piece displayed in the Florence art studio. Our assignment was a still life, and because an orange left out would rot, I could not do it. But from home, I created a new composition with an interesting glass bottle I found, a lemon, and the cut orange, and I took pictures. During this time, art has given me a break from anxiety and stress and has served as an outlet to express myself. My goal with this painting was to challenge myself and choose an object I would not usually lean towards—glass. This painting was difficult and put me out of my comfort zone. I learned new techniques, but most importantly patience. Copy of a detail from La Primavera by Botticelli: I was never able to visit the Uffizi in person. However, upon viewing this museum online, I gained inspiration from the works displayed. The painting Primavera by Botticelli immediately stuck out to me, specifically Flora, the goddess of spring/ flowers. Usually, the viewer’s eye is directed towards the center or focus of the painting, which is Venus. I was drawn towards Flora and the intricate flowers in her flowing hair. I love how elegant and lively the painting is, especially in the area that I chose. The portion I painted of it is Flora, the goddess of spring. Thus, there is a profusion of flowers, which I was very excited to paint. Most of the colors in the flowers are present in the skin tone of her hands. The fabric also tries to blend in with the plants that she’s holding, so it’s a misleadingly dynamic painting. I didn’t get to see Florence in full bloom, but I imagine it would look something like the portion that I chose to capture of Botticelli’s Primavera.
