< PreviousJOURNAL 80 81 JOURNAL The two images that I have submitted are reminders of my time in Florence. In the section of the painting of Apollo Flaying Marsyas, I had the chance to explore the dramatic robes, position, and movement, employed by the Renaissance works I saw. In the Architectural interior scene from the Duomo: The figure at the bottom is my sister from when we climbed the Duomo; her small shape is the right scale for the immensity of those windows. Like hundreds of other students, I was unfortunately sent home due to Covid-19. One of the classes I took while abroad was the foundations of oil painting. I had never painted with oil paints and learned very quickly that it was a very challenging medium. Even though I wasn’t able to continue to paint in Florence, I continued painting at my home in Colorado. It was a creative way for me to remember the best five weeks I spent in Italy. I saw myself improving and enjoying the process more and more. Oil painting has been a way for me to hold onto those memories and find relaxation during these hard times. The cityscape painting is a replica of the view from my apartment balcony. The study of the section of Titian’s Historical painting “Venus of Urbino”, challenged my skills but was such a fun experience. I wanted to finish my semester with a beautiful painting that was a result of hard work and love. Yet I quickly got used to the new teaching method and got a lot from the weekly feedback. For my final project, I made a painting based on a section of the famous Primavera by Botticelli. The city view painting depicts the characteristic rooftops of Florence. Despite everything, I can say I really enjoyed painting both of these pieces, and they will forever remind me of my time in Florence. From what I was learning in the course, I noticed that I walked around the streets of Florence and saw all of the beautiful colors in a different light. Although it took a different turn, once we were sent home, this course tremendously helped me in better seeing natural beauties. Furthermore, I developed skills that now allow me to portray them onto the canvas in a manner in which I would like to.
