< PreviousJOURNAL 50 51 JOURNAL FMA The Animated Short Film class (FMA 212) is not offered at my home university, and I felt that this was the time to learn something I’ve always wanted to pursue as a career. Graphic design and animation seem like two different worlds in the visual community. While there are aspects that align, exploring animation was a welcome change to my usual curriculum as a graphics student. The process of learning far from Florence after getting sent home was a very odd change: the lessons were wonderful, but the change of pace forced me to adjust to seeing the finish line. Creating the film at the end, after all I learned, was incredibly fulfilling. At the beginning of my drawing course, I would spend more time than normal on every piece. I wanted each line and value to be exact. This most likely came from my analytical mindset as a marketing major. Though I am also a minor in art, the reasoning for this mainly came from wanting my creative side documented on a resume. I was struggling with embracing the beauty and freedom of making art. My love for drawing had gone dormant. Over time, my drawing course helped me reignite my passion for creating. Not only do I love drawing again, but I am also experimenting with many other art forms. I impressed myself and found confidence in my skill. I have stuck to my detailed approach but with far less under-drawing, grid lines, and erasing. I am proud of the work I created and found it therapeutic during this unprecedented time. Short Description of Chair Drawing The one-piece that means a great deal to me is my drawing of a chair. This is the first work I was delighted with and it now brings me a deep feeling of nostalgia. I spent much of my time in Florence completing assignments in my apartment’s dining room. So, when we were instructed to draw a single chair, I picked the first one I saw. Unlike how it is depicted, this chair was rarely empty. Many group dinners, early into the morning conversations, espresso, and wine drinking happened in those chairs. When I look back on this drawing I’m saddened by the thought of my now quiet apartment. However, most importantly, I am reminded of the amazing moments I did have. Some aspects that make these drawings stand out are on the cast shadows, the use of chiaro scuro, blending, and shading. I really enjoyed creating these pieces of art and was lucky enough to have quite a bit of time to work on them due to being in quarantine. Despite the challenges of online learning, I feel as if I have become a better artist with the help and constructive criticism I have received from my professor that has greatly improved my drawing skills. I realized that graphite is my favorite medium, as I focused on developing texture, light, and composition. Still life with mannequin drawing Through this assignment, I tried to create dimension by expressing how light falls on fabric and similar textures. This was my first attempt, and I found it challenging to rely solely on light and value. I wanted to thank you again for a great and informative semester! I really valued your patient and steadfast instruction through this crazy time, as I feel like I learned a lot. I appreciated your method of teaching and will continue to apply what I learned. I hope you stay well in Florence! GRACE LEONE Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Prof. Andrea Formica PDM 130 Principles of Drawing and Composition PDMNext >
