< PreviousJOURNAL 190 191 JOURNAL Considering my choice for my midterm subject matter was a portrait of my mother, I decided to depict the rest of my family for my Final Project. Therefore, I painted my step-father and sister. My decisions regarding the colors came to me in terms of how they reflected the individual characters. I believe that within a family or household, each person takes on a role and fits together in a certain way, just as these colors fit together in the color wheel. Looking back through this artistic process, I feel that I have had a thorough understanding and experience of the value of colour when creating a painting or visual arts. This process has taught me how different choices of color can be used to enhance and balance the main subject matter and the background in a painting. My experience of experimenting with this in different forms has given me a broad understanding of the aesthetics of painting and design. To paint as well as to draw is to learn to see. In drawing to see the shapes, the slopes of the lines, the spaces, the shadows and that can only be perceived. There is so much more to learn about painting - color, shade, hue, intensity, hot and cold, transparency, brightness, contrasts...the list goes on. To that comes the brush strokes - short, long, powerful, calm, rapid, visible, invisible... During this semester and this project, I learned a lot about colors and their nature. I am also trained in creating compositions which I also have to work with more. How to create the perfect composition with the most harmonious colors? I want to create my artworks to remind me about Florence, where I studied Fine art. The name Florence sounds like flora, so flowers and the beauty of nature inspire all my projects. My first project is referring to the cloth pattern design of the garment - the rose on Flora in the “Primavera”. Then, in my perfect painting project, I have chosen the orange grove as a subject in my painting. The orange grove is a good example of harmonizing in nature with the colors of orange and green, and branches of the tree. Lastly, my final project is the painting of flowers from fresh and beautiful to a withed condition. In this painting, I want to deliver the message that changing is perpetual, so we just accept and be ready for the change. This is a principle in my life also. In summary, before I attended this class, I created my artworks based on my gut feelings, such as in colors and compositions. Sometimes it works, and when it does not, I could not identify what was wrong with it. In my opinion, this class is an official confirmation of my gut feelings about art and design, whether they are right or wrong. Through all the projects that I have done in this class it helped me develop the method to think and prove all the lessons’ theory. It helped me to understand how to correct myself and to have critical thinking in things. Now, all the homework in my sketchbook becomes my own reference for my artwork and design. I chose an image I took of a church across the Arno River with a reflection of it in the water at sunset. I was inspired to show my experience by using the same image of architecture and developing it in differently depending on the time through this big change of the Pandemic. Each drawing reflects different emotions and stages throughout Covid-19 starting towards the end of my time in Florence in the 1st piece, moving on to the new protocol of quarantine being instated, and finally, the slow progression toward getting our society back to the way it used to be.
