Sketching has been my outlet to take me back to some of Florence’s beautiful artwork. Even though I may not be there physically, sketching has allowed me to return my mind to the place I called home for 6 weeks. My Italian master drawing includes precise dimension and depth. I not only love the finished product, but also thoroughly enjoyed completing this project. Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Prof. Rossana Pinero PDM 183 Florence Sketchbook Beginning PDM SUSANNAH GROVERJOURNAL 186 187 JOURNAL I did a variation of my midterm painting, dealing with an interpretation of the colors and story of the painting by Bartolomeo della Porta. The girl in Bartolomeo della Porta’s painting committed suicide as a symbol of loyalty to her husband, Brutus. This symbol I translated into a Calla Lily representing rebirth. In my Final Project, I wanted to do something more simple, so I chose to paint two Calla Lilies, one that is closed and another open one, still referring to the master painting’s warm colors. My Midterm Painting and my Final Painting represent the circle of life. I did them in white color and incorporated the Portia painting colors in the background. Also, in my Perfect painting which is an abstract interpretation of the circle of life, I am referring to the colors of Bartolomeo della Porta’s painting “Portia”. So, I painted four butterflies - 2 with warm colors and 2 with cold colors - using acrylic paint on white poster paper. I used Lorenzo di Credi’s technique of having a high contrast between the subject and the dark background. The warm colors are influenced by Venus’s skin from the painting by Lorenzo di Credi. Another artist, Andy Warhol, also influenced me in creating the composition for my Final Project. In my Perfect Painting, I created a design of complementary colors in the most harmonious way possible. Overall, I am content and satisfied with how my art pieces in this class turned out. In the beginning, I was nervous to see how well I would do because I had no experience with painting or color theory. Now, I feel more comfortable creating art pieces, and I have learned to enjoy painting. Although it was sad that we could not finish our semester in Florence, I enjoyed painting at home and experimenting with colors and different techniques.
