< PreviousJOURNAL 200 201 JOURNAL Having already taken drawing classes in the past, this intermediate class truly enhanced my skills much further than before. Taking it in Florence, with an art appreciation, made it all the more inspiring. Although my time in this magnificent city got cut short, I was able to take all that I had learned with me back home and was able to still bring the same ambition to my work. I am very pleased with the work I was able to complete, and as I look back on my experience I feel that I pushed myself to improve as both an artist and a person. Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Prof. Gregory Burney PDM 260 Intermediate Drawing PDM MAYA NICOLE JUDOVITSJOURNAL 202 203 JOURNAL My experience, traveling from school to home, was, like most people’s, very strange. This drawing represents the feeling my friend and I experienced when on our first stop from Florence, Valencia. It represents the beauty and excitement, the sunshine, and joy that gave us home in a time of uncertainty. We felt inspired, something that we had been previously lacking in the turmoil we had experienced the weeks before in Florence. The second drawing is taken from the moment when we were told that we would not be returning to Florence. This depicts a girl sitting on a balcony, with a dark and moody background. The charcoal has been used to create depth and isolation. Suddenly being in Valencia without any of our belongings and uncertainty about where we would travel next became frightening. This image depicts the moment where we felt small and alone, the reality of not returning to our beloved Florence, and continuing our classes was depressing and demotivating. The depiction of the broken down building represents the feeling of termination. Things had stopped, when would they start again? I chose to add lightness in the top left corner as a notion of hope. The visored windows and clean shutters give the sensation that all is not lost, and we can still peek through to the bright side. The use of dark casting shadows heighten the moody atmosphere, and the physical isolation of the girl with a busy background furthers her feeling of helplessness. It may not be very personal, but the life that has circulated in recent months. It has been difficult to find inspiration from anywhere else. You are fed all the time with washing your hands, keeping a distance, and using a mask. I still got something personal because I was drawing my niece’s little girl with full protective gear sitting on the couch with her iPad. I feel satisfied with the three drawings. Conclusion Despite the Coronavirus and that the school has been closed, I still think the education has worked well. I have been given constructive and useful supervision at a distance. I see and feel that I have developed my drawing or my way of seeing. I have been given greater security and now feel that nothing is impossible. I can draw everything and with a little patience, it can certainly be really good. Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media | Prof. Gregory Burney PDM 260 Intermediate Drawing PDM PIA KRISTINA KARLSSONJOURNAL 206 207 JOURNAL The choice of my final project is the series of ink drawing along with watercolor on top of it. The subject is about the memories and feelings that I have to Florence during my time there, the unplanned leaving moment, and the missing moment of the city. I choose to work my drawing with watercolor because they are a good combination of controlled and uncontrolled media types. For drawing, we can draw anything as perfect as we want because controlling lines and shadows with hands is easy to do. However, when you think about watercolor painting it is less controllable than drawing because colors will run by water go in any direction. In my opinion, the drawing with a pen will give us a strong and clear story with lines, but watercolor painting will help harmonize the work by softening the picture and create feelings with colors. In summary, I see myself improve in drawing if comparing to the past. In the past, I thought drawing is just a basic skill for any other type of arts like oil painting or printmaking. However, this class has introduced me that there are many different types of drawing media, which we can use to create interesting artworks to give a message or story. I was walking along a street in Rome, where I spotted an anonymous woman standing with a sign and 2 masks covering her face. Through my subject matter, the social, political, and cultural viewpoints of Covid-19 are brought to light. The woman is anonymous, with no parts of her skin visible. We don’t know who she is or where she is from, and it does not matter, for the virus attacks anyone and everyone, regardless of culture. More than ever right now, the world needs unity.
