< PreviousJOURNAL 170 171 JOURNAL I was never really into art, but then I came to Firenze and found myself crying in the Uffizi. Florence has the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen, and I’m so glad that I enjoyed it daily, even though our time was cut short. Continually being surrounded by art in Florence inspired me to explore the human body’s tension through the sense of linear movement. Walking through the Uffizi, I was always fascinated by the use of color in some works. It was also interesting to find out the symbolic meanings of these colors during the Renaissance period. For my midterm I made a watercolor based on Elisabetta Sirani’s “Madonna and Child”. The other sketch of the Duomo is a view that I miss seeing every day, but I am happy to look at it now and think back to the amazing few weeks I had. It was wonderful to explore the city (even from a distance) and focus on making its minute details tangible through sketches and watercolors. I based most of the drawings off of reference photos I took while there, and seeing them helped to ease the yearning I have to return. Art was a means of escape, even when staying at home. It makes hours melt into minutes. Working from pictures isn’t the most ideal, but it only gives me more excuse to come back to Florence and fill another sketchbook!
