It also lets me explore my creativity in different ways. I enjoy going to museums and looking at art since I was little. My mom used to be the art teacher at my family’s summer camp, and later on, when I was 15 years old, I started being the art teacher for the little kids. I taught them about different artists like Picasso, Monet, Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, Van Gogh and Salvador Dali, and then I made them experiment with all their different techniques. I get most of my inspiration from the great impressionist artists. I love seeing how each one of them has a unique painting style. I usually use watercolors for painting, but this semester I got to explore the wonders of digital painting in Photoshop. It was my first time using this medium and I absolutely loved it. “Wanderer in Florence” is a painting I did for my Digital Sketchbook midterm exam. At first I was apprehensive about the task, I had to paint a composition, that consists of a background and an object, and It had to be based in the streets of Florence. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to pull it off because it looked very hard, but after a lot of days of hard work and determination, I finished the work and was very impressed with the results. It was definitely one of my favorite tasks. I worked on every single detail of the building, adding lights, shadows, and texture. To top it off, I added a lamp post. This painting made me explore photoshop even more, I didn’t know I had the opportunity to do so many different things with the painting. I worked by layers, first with the outline, then with the colors and then adding the details. I explored with colors, opacity, and different brush presets to make it look more real and have a life of its own. PAULA LLAGUNOJOURNAL 132 133 JOURNAL I always love to make colorful works because they make me happy. Especially in this weird time we need to make ourselves happy. I love to make colorful digital work, paintings, and even wear colorful clothes. About this time, for me (and I know for a lot of people) it has been very hard. I miss classes and I loved going to the classes. It was the first time that I liked going to school and classes and didn’t feel like it was homework. Unfortunaltey, everything changed due to coronavirus, and I became very sad. I didn’t have theoretical classes, so it was hard to do the practical ones online. I hope I get to go back one day and study abroad, because I think studying abroad is the best thing young people can do. I loved it there. The background of this illustration is based on several pictures I took on my phone camera during some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Interpretation of Bacchus For our final class assignment, we were tasked with choosing a painting from the Uffizi Gallery and reinterpreting it in our own style. As a long time fan of Caravaggio’s work, I chose to study and interpret his painting “Bacchus” (1596) because I’ve always been fascinated by the model. His gaze is entrancing, bewitching even. I love the mystery of Caravaggio’s original. In my interpretation, I wanted to give Bacchus a ghostlier appearance to exaggerate his ethereal ambiance. I also enjoy “fruity” colors, so my interpretation of the original color scheme is brighter and more saturated. I wanted to reflect this shift in my piece by putting a digital spin on Botticelli’s Cestello Annunciation. I juxtaposed my work against the original background of the piece. Showing how we must adjust and adapt to changing times while still remembering our traditional roots. Working on this piece was a great way for me to feel connected to Florence even while stuck at home. I absolutely loved being able to take risks and experiment with my work because I could always undo a step and go in a different direction. Being in quarantine back in the U.S. really makes me miss Florence, and this piece portrays one of my favorite spots that looks out over the city. I also thought of what life might look like through the eyes of statues- lonely but peaceful.
