< PreviousJOURNAL 120 Video: https://youtu.be/k6m943xWH7s 121 JOURNAL For my final project, I have decided to recreate Winona Ryder’s iconic white dress from the Tim Burton film “Edward Scissorhands” which happens to be my favorite film of all time. Knowing my current skill level when it comes to recreating costumes, I knew immediately this dress while appearing simple, would be a challenge in certain areas. I’m very used to constructing corsets made to hug the figure to give the outer layer a more “smooth” effect. With Winona’s white dress, there is no corset, yet the outfit remains smooth and structured. I knew this would be a challenge, yet I was ready to take it on as this has been a dream costume of mine for years. To recreate this dress accurately, I gathered as many reference photos as I possibly could, there are not that many out there of just the dress. Hence, I resulted to watching clips from the film several times to study how the dress moved, the flow of the skirts, where the seam lines of the bodice would go, the distance between the skirts and her feet, even the length of the sleeves. Through watching these clips over and over, I was able to estimate how to transfer the dress proportions of Winona to myself. This semester out of curiosity, I signed up for the digital sketchbook class at Lorenzo de Medici. Even though I thought it was impossible, I learned that digital art is a skill that requires a lot of practice and patience. It is something that I would like to continue to pursue in my future, and a skill which I think will come in handy in my path to becoming a graphic designer. Although the paintings are simple they mean that I am capable of getting better at digital art. I felt lost, frustrated, and overwhelmed. This was the first work I did when I got back. It was extremely overdue, and I felt ashamed at how little motivation I had, but I pushed through. I didn’t allow myself to turn in something I wasn’t proud of, and the reward in the end was a huge boost in confidence in my future works. Deer This piece was created when I was still in Florence, before there was even a hint of the tragedy to come. Historically, I have been very comfortable drawing animals and exploring more than natural color palettes for those beings. This was my first digital animal, and it was an amazing way to explore the new digital world at my fingertips, just starting to be available. Without my experience at LdM, no matter how short, I may never have learned these new mediums for artistic creation. Medusa My interpretation of Caravaggio’s Medusa is the culmination of the ups and downs of the semester. I came into the project with confidence, excited to explore my own style. She was one of my favorite pieces when I visited the Uffizi, the last outing my lovely roommates and I made in Florence before departing. It was bittersweet, spending time in such a beautiful place, with people I had come to love, and I now deeply miss it. This piece has been created using Adobe Photoshop painting tools. It was important for me to take a masterwork from the past and come in with a refreshed look. Here I decided to focus on turning up the original color, now incorporating bright and contrasting hues. I began by sketching the original work, and then I laid down the base colors. After, I blended and continued adding color. Navigating the execution of highlights and shadows using new hues while still remaining faithful to the original forms was a challenge, but I am satisfied with this result. My favorite part of the process was working on the layers in the white garment and deciding how to make the colors move into one another. I am pleased with the piece and am excited to explore the process further in the future. Day in Bologna This piece was created using Adobe Photoshop painting tools. There was a focus here to recognize a strong but simple color palette. Looking for an image to remind me of my time in Italy, I found this view in my photos and wanted to create it digitally. I like it for its warmth, upward perspective, and open space. Additionally, studying how light and shadows interact color-wise was a challenge that held my interest as I worked. I chose to paint a house in Florence because of the two months that I got to live there. I decided to add the bird to the composition since I thought it looked nice, but now that I think about it, it represents freedom and peace of mind. Mountains This artwork was made for my digital sketchbook class, and we were told to draw freely and use different colors. I chose to draw a unique landscape since I think we all miss going out and exploring different areas.
