< PreviousJOURNAL 140 141 JOURNAL PDM Recreation done in watercolor, original is oil paint on canvas. My experience in Italy was short but incredible. Getting to live in a place so far away from home that was so different but still so similar. I felt myself drawn to this particular piece the second time I visited the Uffizi. The first time it was really crowded and I didn’t pay much attention to it, but by the second time the museum was not as full and I had time to examine each piece with more attention. This one called to me because of how mundane the scene seemed. Most other paintings I saw depicted deities or people with money and title be depicted in beautiful but stiff and manicured ways. This seemed like a picture someone took just because, no reason or meaning behind it. We don’t know who the woman is or where the scene takes place. It’s a reality that we don’t usually see about the past. In a way it connects us to this past, we all wash the dishes, just like the woman in the painting. I can feel myself, and see my essence. My experience in Florence help me to train my eye, to see beyond the thing that is in front of me and try to capture it’s essence, I really owe all my knowledge to my professor who really encourage me to do more and be better in each drawing. This series is inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci, and it will always remind me of my time in Florence. I went to the city center and took pictures of the locals. There is so much going on when you look around from people doing art to enjoying their espresso break. I had the most amazing time living there. I never got the chance to go before I had to leave, but I thought it would be a fitting tribute to my time to still paint what I had been so excited for. I hope I can return and visit myself one day, but for now, I’ll stare at this painting and dream about it. I cut the paper into hexagons to be more representative of a beehive, and I painted this in gouache on watercolor paper. The sunset painting is the same medium, and it is a scene looking out to the buildings across the street from my living room window in Florence.
