< PreviousJOURNAL 110 Video: https://youtu.be/Un8qtHt9uxc 111 JOURNAL In the project of “Angel Island” a short film with influences derived from directors such as Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, and David Lynch - I explored video as a medium for one of the first times. Conceptually, I thought of making a video relating to the global COVID-19 pandemic that left me and many of my friends with an uncertain and strange future. I considered documenting the empty aisles at the grocery store, I considered adding footage from my last moments in Florence, or documenting the disparaging homeless population that has now ravaged my city of San Francisco - but finally I settled for telling my version of the truth. That I had come to my mom’s small cottage on the beach to seek comfort from nature- and fantasize about the past, present, and future. In every aspect, I search for the truth, and with the revelation of that truth, I will respond with my honest interpretation of that; therefore every artwork is a self- portrait. In a somewhat way, In a complicated way. I can not detach myself from my work, and I also don’t attempt to do so. In this work, I challenge the man’s relationship with the four elements. The process is the artwork, and the process is the poem read. The environment tortures the red-painted canvases; the result they show that’s the title of this poem. For this project, I have a camera recording me as I collaborate with the elements to paint four canvases. One for each element painted with red watercolor. I started with using the words from my journal/diary that I have had and been writing in since I was ten years old till now (twenty years old). I fell in love with this idea because I do not know anyone personally who has kept a diary for that long and can look back at a time in their life when they were in fifth grade. This mad me feel very unique compared to other people my age, that is why I wanted to expand on this idea and truly make something authentic and creative out of it. Though my main medium remains photography, I have enjoyed exploring new methods of creating, pushed by my Expanding Creativity class led by Federico Gori. I have selected pieces from our exercises that most embodies the complex nature of this semester and its development. The polished nature of “arancia” most accurately reflects the brief period of normalcy in attending classes in Florence. Alternatively, “sharing” and “remnants” are pieces that deal with the leftover feelings of returning to a home empty of purpose or comfort. In uncertain times, art, even in mediums I have only just begun to explore, has been a source of hope and the last attachment of goals I had for my time in Florence.JOURNAL 118 119 JOURNAL One always does what he feels and as a person, I see a mixture of many styles and tastes, nothing specific, simple and natural. I just let my emotions flow and the amazement of responding to the new that is presented. Each one feels different, different concerns, goals, experiences that depend on emotions. In my environment, where I live, in Mexico, there are many differences, and I can think about what others feel and feel it for a second. Empathy is what is missing in many people. For this work I removed the soles of a pair of shoes and took some photos on the outside, these shoes lack the support of the soles making it difficult to walk, we need them, like the Mexican population with its government.
