< PreviousJOURNAL 200 201 JOURNAL GRA I enjoyed this assignment. Listening to Steve Job’s speach I was moved and challenged by his perception of life. It was a highly motivational lecture with a lot to gain. Illustration After I decided on each poster’s title, I only had this image in my mind, of a man taking the risk to jump off a cliff and then being in the air, of course, was impossible but not for what he intended to do! Even though he came close to death, he made it to the other side, and these experiences changed him as it was an opportunity to do something, he once thought it impossible but was triumphant in the end. Border I added the different colored borders to each poster to add a geometric element in them and to have an extra element that combines them. Background The background picture I chose is without copyright since it was retrieved from the ‘unsplash’ website. I wanted to have a landscape view, preferably nature on the back, thus I chose this picture. Poster Titles I decided on my titles or sayings for my poster based on each speech and different inspirational ideas or sayings I remembered from other things that I observed to be related to Steve Job’s purpose and meanings. Typography The typeface I used for my titles/sayings is a font I had downloaded called “Eight One”. With the titles, I tried different sizes and positions, and, in the end, I liked the fact that they are positioned in the way of an incline (starting low and moving upwards). I also increased the size of some of the words to emphasize their meaning. I played around with putting them side by side or stacked. I eventually realized that changing the & symbol to be much larger than the font balances it out. I wanted to add on something for the logo mark, I started with creating the brush stroke & symbol, but it still felt bland. This is where I came into the sun like symbol. I felt something rounder would make it more dynamic. I thought the repetition would also look good. I knew that having all of them together seemed too busy. I played around with maybe just deleting part of it. This is where the combo mark came from by combing the lines and the & symbol. Like Steve Jobs, this story starts from the bottom and works its way to the top. As I listened to the speech for the third time, I began visualizing his story. I was struck by how he dropped out of college because it seemed like a waste of time with classes he did not even care about and began going only to the courses he enjoyed. Little did he know that those lessons and five cents he made off his soda cans to buy food were the fuel that sparked a fire in his life, first with Apple and then Next and Pixar. Because of this, I chose a can of coke and change for my first poster. He trusted that these hardships would pay off (and they did). When he was kicked out of his own team at Apple he did not settle and move on but instead refused to stop pushing himself to something greater. The stop sign image is supposed to represent what everyone is telling him, but he takes that as keep going. Lastly, the final poster is created to show off his greatest accomplishment. Although he is well known for Apple, I believe Pixar is genuinely his greatest accomplishment because he created it in a time when he doubted himself but pulled through because he knew he couldn’t give up on the thing he loves. Design It was essential for me to have all the posters flow. I created a movement within the introductory poster, which flows into the following posters. The viewer’s eye will follow the words of Steve Jobs and be led into the third poster, where I created a similar icon to the Pixar lamp in illustrator. I wanted this poster to make the most significant statement as it sums up Steve Jobs’ achievements. I used a metal/reflection within the lamp as the quote associated goes with the part of the speech when he is talking about looking in the mirror and reflecting on your life. The first thing I thought of concerning the first quote was hands. All of the images in the posters were found on unsplash, a website that has free to use images, and all have a resoultion of at least300ppi. Children trust their parents and other adults in their lives, which is why I used an adult holding a child’s hand in the first poster. The second poster’s prompt “don’t settle” gave me a hard time. I didn’t really know what to do for this one, so I reevaluated the first and decided to continue the theme of hands. The third poster was the hardest to find the right picture. I went through 5 pictures to find one with the right composition. The typeface I used is an Adobe font called Acier BAT. I struggled with the typography with all three posters. I tried three different compositions with each of them before settling on the final one. I added the white border to unify the three posters as well as add some depth. I used a gradient map on the photographs, two out of three of them were black and white to start with. In the background I tried to use contrasting hues and values to try to make the image stick out.
