< PreviousJOURNAL 240 241 JOURNAL Artist’s Statement, Concept and Technical Development This triptych is uncomfortable. The viewer can’t settle their eyes on one spot. They are not allowed into the painting. There is no room for a viewer. It is meant to feel forced, chaotic, and flat. In defense of that, I think that is how all our lives are feeling currently, regardless of with whom we are quarantined. Even being quarantined alone can make someone feel attacked; you would have nowhere to go except for into yourself which is profoundly uncomfortable for many. There are those resistant to that mode of self-study, but they, in particular, are thrown aside by this painting like a leaf on the roof of a car. No one is allowed to rest. This is also the message of the subjects who cannot leave their abusers. They have no chance to rest or recover between bouts of fear, desperation, and violence.
