The prints at home were new and interesting ways to combine my different loves of art with drawing and painting combined with printmaking. Being able to use pictures I took from beautiful views in Italy in the short time I was there was a nice way to reminisce about all the memories I created during the month I was there. There are many ways to make prints and expand creativity that I have learned to push myself in new ways. While this course was still occurring in Florence, Italy, I had the opportunity to learn a blockprinting technique that involves carving a woodblock piece. The subject of my piece was a repeating pattern of flowers, seen in the first print. Unfortunately, with the circumstances of the semester, I was sent home early. When classes resumed online, it was different to learn a new art skill over Zoom, but I persevered. My new prints from home involved a gelli-plate, a gelatin slab that paint can be rolled onto to create prints. A technique that I learned this semester was magazine transfer. The artist pulls a page from a magazine, places it onto the inked gelli-plate, and when lifted back, the magazine photo is transferred. For the subject of my second print, I chose a picture of a woman sitting down in a stripped wrapped dress. For my final print, I decided to combine the two art forms, resulting in Lady of the Flowers. Combining the two pieces brought a piece of Florence and home together, as well as patterns and free form lines. I used a solid black acrylic paint for the magazine transfer, and a rusted pink and hint of green for the flowers to add contrast, and bring the colors of nature to life. In conclusion, even though unfortunate events may arise, my journal publication shows that I was still able to develop new skills and grow to become a better artist. I did not end the semester this way, because I was forced to return to the United States early. Once I got back, I decided to make art about staying home, which is relevant to the situation the entire world is in with coronavirus. The first piece is the print I made in Italy. It features sunflowers and trees from one of my favorite pictures of my front lawn in my home state, Maine. I did not get to finish this artwork, but I like how it turned out, and I am proud of all of the hard work I put into it. The second piece was based on the most well-known image of a plague doctor. I thought it made sense to make art relevant to coronavirus, as we are living through a strange time in history. I had initially intended this piece to be simple and have a banner that read “Stay home”. I decided not to incorporate the phrase into the artwork and instead titled it “Stay home”.
