< PreviousJOURNAL 30 31 JOURNAL PHO This photo series was taken at golden hour in a wooded area in my neighborhood. I made all of the garments, and I used varying camera settings and a reflector throughout the shoot to maintain a warm glow on my model. This series represents the exploration and resurgence of people exploring nature now that many have the time to do so. I had always loved the beauty of milk bath photos, and I wanted to try for myself. I wanted to emote a sense of softness, yet powerful, such as Cleopatra, who famously took milk baths regularly during her reign. The dramatic lighting and props contributed to this, and the emotions that my model conveyed brought the images to life. I thought that this would be a perfect idea for black and white editing, considering the ancient inspiration, and how dramatic the shoot was. I have always felt that black and white editing adds an extra sense of intensity to an image, so I tried to keep that in mind while shooting. Even though my time in Florence was cut short, I truly feel like this class helped me expand my understanding of fashion photography. I love these pictures because not only am I proud of them technically, but I love the story provided in the content. I was so lucky that I was able to work with my cousin, Leilani Kilroy (pictured in the portraits), for most of my projects. She was an amazing model, and we had a fantastic time shooting together. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do! Making new friends and connections put me in contact with other confident, artistic women who I have had the pleasure of calling my models. “Valentine” is an image from my first fashion shoot in Florence right outside the Piazza della Repubblica and my home for what seemed like just a moment. “Emma” is an image from my only studio shoot, two days before my unexpected departure from Italy. “Madonna” is a self-portrait, taken upon my arrival home and inspired by the art I was so privileged to view in the Uffizi. These three images, taken of strong, confident women, communicate a united sense of emotion and honesty that makes an image or a concept worth pursuing and, more than that, worth viewing at all. 1.
