She usually goes swimming every day, but she is not allowed right now due to restrictions. She told me that this was the first time that she wasn’t able to swim in the sea since World War II, this is also the first time schools closed in Italy since World War II. Some people even say it feels like we are at war again but with a force from which we don’t know what it can do. FOLKERT GOSLINGSJOURNAL 12 13 JOURNAL PHO These images represent how this year spring comes and we can only stare at its beauty through our windows. As days go by, rain comes and eventually, all the flowers fall off, but I am still here staring through the window. The creative process picture represents how our minds can take us anywhere we can imagine. There is life in the flowers sitting in my room, there is life in the photos of my friends and me in Florence hanging on my walls, and there’s a reminder of my life on my vanity filled with tools and products I use every day to keep life as normal as possible. This is my life for now, and although it is not what I had expected or planned it is still a life worth living and celebrating. I felt cut off from adventure and opportunity, and I couldn’t wait to grow up and leave forever. But now that I have seen many of the places I dreamt about leaving my hometown for, I come back and feel a newfound comfort here. As I’ve traveled the US and seen the completely different landscapes of each region, I return home with a more nuanced eye for what makes the South, particularly the rural parts, so different from the rest of the country. Most rural towns I’ve driven through across the country look similar and all exude an indescribable charm. They’re composed of rundown local businesses, a spread of fast food restaurants, a beautiful row of homes from a bygone era, and whatever random modern buildings have been constructed to meet a growing population’s demands. These aspects of a rural town’s landscape are what I wanted to show in this series of photos. All of the art related courses that I could take expanded my abilities and creativity in many ways. Specifically, this introductive photography class opened me to so many new opportunities and exposed me to a newfound passion. Although the experiences abroad in Florence were cut short, photography is something special that can thankfully be done anywhere. As a global pandemic is going on, it is important to look around us, take everything in, and appreciate our world in ways that we might not have three months ago. These photos were captured in one of the epicenters of the virus, New York. It was really something special to be able to photograph in New York City and capture the purest moments of human condition during the time of COVID-19. The expressions and emotions of the nurses, the sound of live music and clapping; being able to capture this through a lens was an eye-opening experience for myself as a person and my interests in certain styles of photography. It was so touching and inspiring to be able to capture moments of people’s lives, that can one day be used to share a story to millions of others, and show what life was like during these times.
