< PreviousJOURNAL 110 111 JOURNAL The site is unique for its location and the richness in tree vegetation it holds. It used to be a tree nursery, which is why it is now home to a set of majestic trees that make this park unique in its type. It has a vast surface (nearly 12.000 sqm), which is mostly flat and three main streets that give access to the park. The concept of the project was born by taking the center of the park and then tracing two main axes. This axis was inspired by the way Romans traced cities, using cardo and decumanus. From here, 4 quadrants were created, which would contain something special that attracted people to go and experience. Ramps were added to add to the site´s flatness and remark the park´s central point. Here, paths in square shape were offset to continue creating a variety of public spaces. The Giardino, also considered as the “green oasis,” is the only public space for the neighborhood. With the overcrowded usage of areas, floor materials in adverse conditions, and the absence of different activities to supply all the people’s needs, the park is indeed looking for a new perspective. The project tries to respect the original configuration of the actual existing paths and dividing the park into 3 different main areas, the playground, with a diverse variety of urban furniture for kids to play, the sports area, enclosed with a running track and a variety of floor materials for different activities and finally the central square that improves the pedestrian circulation and functions as a low-speed area. The project creates diversity, freedom, inclusion, accessibility and, most importantly an oasis for activities for the city. This garden represents an essential space for local communities, but as of today phenomena of overcrowding and social exclusion represent a limit to be overcome. Projects for the site should envision an inclusive space and improve its green and playful character. To play is a great way to meet the other and build a more inclusive society, but it can also be a great way to exercise to build a healthier society. Playing in the public space should not be limited to kids, but should include more opportunities to practise sports. Projects should replace and update existing playgrounds for kids and introduce new spaces for sports open to teenagers and to the elederly. The project’s brief for this area should envision a contemporary public space with a special connection with the Arno River. Starting from the site analysis and the comprehension of the strengths and weaknesses of the place, the project’s aim is to delimit a specific parking area, to integrate more green areas and a fountain in the plaza and to promote the individual’s view towards the church of San Frediano from all around. A new stair connects the plaza and the river and works also as a stage and a new viewpoint towards the river. The project shows how the connection with the river can create an ideal public space and a connection between people and the river again.Next >
